I'm Goin' Granny

I have been traumatized, y'all. TRAU-MA-TIZED. I was all up in the mirror yesterday, trying to figure out what to do with the massive frizzy nightmare atop my head (also known as "hair"), when WHAM. There amid the sea of brunette was one very noticeable, light-colored interloper. Just a blonde highlight? I thought hopefully.

But when I yanked it out ... hello, Grandma! It was straight-up gray, nowhere near the platinum highlight I'd prayed it would be. I desperately held it up to the black shower curtain, a black towel, the black bath mat (and no, I don't live in some goth world - my bathroom is black and cream) - but every dark surface only served to illuminate the fact that, yes, it was a horrible gray. It was, like, uber-gray even. Like, really REALLY gray and totally coarse. Real live old lady-hair. See for yourself!

It's not my first. It's actually my second. But I think the last one I found was, like, almost two years ago. And at the time, I tricked myself into thinking it was some sort of fluke: like just some hair that grew weird in its follicle. You know, like a defective one? Now, though, I have to realize that this gray hair isn't a fluke, but a little glimpse of the inevitable condition of my entire head. My hair's hard enough to manage now - what am I going to do when my whole head is like the texture of pubes, only a little straighter?

I'm so in for it.

For now: anybody wanna recommend a good hair dye?

  1. You know...maybe that hair grew out of the same follicle that you plucked the last one from...that means you just have to pull one hair every 2 years - sounds like a good deal to me ;) I use Herbal Essence hair dye...it is fabulous and smells delightful - not like the others that make you cry from the fumes!

  2. lol@ WM!!
    I'm so sorry darlin'.
If you really want to dye your hair, since it's dark, go to Sally's. I use Clariol creme, & 20 developer, but be sure to use a red/gold color corrector with anything you use. Most brunettes will turn orange or red, and that will prevent it. (and completely cover that gray! lol)
I started pulling grays out about a year ago. Mine I think are neon. They appear out of nowhere, and can be seen from the Hubble.
I'll wear black out of mourning just for you, today.

  3. You have my sincere sympathy.
mrjfurjjmmjmmmmmnjr hahahahahhah Sorry, I could not hold it.
No, that's just mean of me, isn't it? My bad.
I think Working Mommy is right, so don't worry for a couple years.

  5. OMG
I hope to never find one of those. And, I will do so by continually highlighting/dying my hair so that it never happens.

  8. Morgan is horrified by the same thing (and she is much younger than you), she has been struck by it young. My aunt was completely gray before 30, and wasn't crazy about it either, she simply colored her hair as well. And I am just now getting grey, but it is no biggie because I had that mousy blonde stuff for years, and have colored all along. Don't despair, color is your friend.

  9. I've found greys too. In fact, there's a little colony of them that have taken residence on my temples. Here's the thing that gets me: How do they go from being "not there" to suddenly appearing FULLY GROWN? Sneaky little devils.

  11. I don't think I've ever left you a comment before (I'm kind of a lurker, sorry) but your blog makes die with laughter!! Oh and as a natural-blonde-turned-brunette, I highly recommend Nice 'n' Easy Perfect Ten, it is the most amazing haircolor-in-a-box I've ever used. :P

  12. Take it as a badge of HONOR! You've worked hard to deserve that grey hair!

  13. I started getting the invasion of a few straglers at 29..and I've attacked 'em with dye ever since. I've tried a few different brands and colors...but I really like L'oreal Superior Preference from the Decadent Chocolate Collection (sounds good 'nough to eat!) and my chosen color is 4M Dark Mahogany Brown...sexay!

  14. Are you kidding me? TWO? My (former) hairstylist just thought to tell me a few months ago that the entire back of my head has more white than dishwater blonde and THAT is why my $80 color was being washed down the shower drain not too long after being put on my hair but I'm NOT paying that boy any more $$. I had NO idea that is why my color wasn't sticking anymore. Thank goodness it's more white than grey so I can fool people a little longer into thinking that it is a blonde highlight! Well, NOW I can't. Duh.

  15. I don't want to hear it.....I found 3 the other day & I've completely skipped gray - they were white!!!! WTF? Oh & you found one another time....or should I say Lisa did one time when we were up there, remember? I went to Heather last week b/c it was way overdue for me!

  16. Well, you've discovered yet another side-effect of parenting. Just wait until the boys become teens! I have no idea what color my hair really is any more, and I don't care. As long as I have Nice & Easy, I'll be just fine! (Actually the hair-coloring process seems to take some of the coarseness out of those grays, too.)

  17. LOL.. my roots were getting so bad I ended up coloring my hair myself for the first time in about 3 years.... and I really like how it turned out....
    you can see: http://365bysarae.blogspot.com/2010/01/day-14-bbye-gray.html

and... don't fret.. it happens to all of us .. I'm 42 and nobody ever thinks I'm as old as I am....but if they looked at my roots every couple of months, they might be able to guess..LOL

    and... hi from SITS

  18. OMG!! I'm in the same boat as you!! At first it was 1, then 2, now 4!!!!! :( I've already started dying my hair, and I recommend Herbal Essence. That's only if you are going to want to do this at home, which is way cheaper, than the salon.

  19. You think that's bad - wait for the day that you notice a grey hair in your eyebrow that is not only grey, but also 4 times longer than all the other eyebrow hairs.
