"Stuff I Like" Sunday: Halloween Edition!

Photobucket
So have you guys noticed the Halloween countdown on the lefthand sidebar of my blog? That should make it obvious: I'm all about Halloween. What other time of year is it acceptable - expected, even - to eat candy until you feel sick? In fact, I think it's gotten even better since becoming an adult. Now, since I buy the Halloween candy for the neighborhood trick-or-treaters, I can buy the stuff I like and burn through it nibble on it all month long. Not only that, but I can pilfer through my kids' candy ... you know, for safety reasons. To make sure there aren't, you know, razor blades in their taffy or something. And to take out the things that are, like, choking hazards. Or the stuff with, um, suspicious wrappers. Yeah. Safety all the way.

Every Halloween (except for this year, because I've been overrun busy with kids), it's a tradition of mine to tweak regular pictures and make them all ... Halloween-y. Like this precious photo of my sister Amy and me:

... Or this one of yours truly ...

... Or my usually-lovely mother, who I tried to witch-ify in this pic (but who ended up reminding me a little bit of Meryl Streep instead) ...

... Or Colin and I from a couple years ago (I was pregnant with Cameron in this picture).

Another Halloween tradition of mine? Reading this book cover-to-cover:

I love, love, love this book. It tells about the history of Halloween, and is full of recipes and ideas and fun things to do.

Another thing I love: Halloween parties. I mean adult Halloween parties. They're like a "you're-too-old-to-go-Trick-or-Treating-but-here's-something-fun-for-you" consolation prize. Like the parties you attended as a kid, but with alcohol (whee!). And since Halloween isn't complete without goodies, here are a few for you: some spooky themed cocktails (you'll find some more good ones here) and a thing I wrote a couple of years ago called Throw a Spook-tacular Adult Halloween Party.

I know it's a little early, but I thought I'd share all this stuff with you now in case you're planning a party (and if you are, it's still early enough to send me an invitation!). And what better time to share than on "Stuff I Like" Sunday?
Have a freaky week - and a happy Halloween!

  1. Glad I'm not the only adult who secretly wants to join the neighborhood kids for a night of trick-or-treating, ha! This year since I'll be 8 months pregnant, I'm thinking of dressing up as Juno.

  2. Yes, you definitely get your love of Halloween from your mother! I always get my decorations out by at least Oct. 1st so I can enjoy them longer. I don't have the type of job where I can dress up at work, but the old witch outfit is still stored in the closet just in case an opportunity arises. Can't wait to see pictures of the boys in their costumes!

  3. I've never heard of that book. I'm going to check it out. I love Halloween, too--but not for the costumes. (I'm incredibly lousy at that!) I love the apple cider and all the goodies! Oh, and I like the adult parties and haunted houses, too.

Fighting off Frumpy? You're 29!! We'll talk again when you hit 50, girl!

  4. I love when Halloween candy appears in store aisles. It's the only time I can buy Oh Henry candy bars. THE BEST candy bar EVER!

  6. Great blog! Halloween is a favorite! Though I haven't had the energy to have a party -- takes 3 weeks to decorate a week to cook and another to break it down 'cause we do it right~! Graveyards to dig, ghouls to pop out of trees...fog machines and eeery soundtrack and movies to project....I KNOW you get the idea b/c your makeup is wonderful! Stopping by from SITS......

  9. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, too. Its just so. . .fun, and I love the fact that it ISN'T a big family thing (meaning we don't have to drag the children to see every member of the family on both sides or be dammed for the entire next year), which makes it a REAL family thing (as in - MY family. Me. Him. Kid. Nice)

  11. I love Halloween, too. This year Mike, my sis, her boyfriend, my aunt, her boyfriend, and I are all going to an adult party. However, it's either black tie or costume dress... We're definitely going costume. The costume has to be tasteful and dressy, so I'm think we should each be a Clue character. I hope we can make it work.

Commenting makes you big and strong! Okay, maybe just strong. Okay, so it's only your fingers. But still ...
