Knock Knock!

Colin has discovered knock-knock jokes, which is bad enough. But knock-knock jokes are worse when the teller hasn't yet discovered the meaning of "funny." The poor guy thinks he's being hilarious when he busts out knee-slappers such as:

"Knock knock!"
"Who's there?"
"Chicken."
"Chicken who?"
"Chicken who is getting cold!"

or

"Knock knock!"
"Who's there?"
"Volcano."
"Volcano who?"
"Volcano who cries!" (*insert hysterical laughter here*) "Because, Mommy, volcanoes don't really cry."

I have perfected a hearty and convincing fake laugh, which I developed for just such an occasion. So with each ridiculously un-funny joke he tells, and for every (incessant, repetitive) one until he actually learns what's humorous, I'll make good use of it, letting him feel like the uproarious comedian he envisions himself to be.

Because if your mom isn't your biggest fan, then who is?

  1. You need to teach them some "decent" knock knock jokes:

    Knock Knock
    Who's There?
    Gorilla
    Gorilla who?
Gorilla cheese sandwich with a pickle!

My 6 year old's, Owen, has this favorite:
    Knock Knock
    Who's there"
    Owen
    Owen who?
    (sings) O when the saints
    come marching in
O when the saints come marching in....

  2. I remember when my cousin went through this. It would go:
    Knock knock
    Who's there
    (he looks around outside)
    Tree
    Tree who?
    Tree that's green & brown!!!

He then laughs uncontrollably with his infectious laughter thus causing me to laugh uncontrollably causing him to think his joke was ACTUALLY funny!

He's 18 now... damn, time flies.

  10. Oh my heart - that was such a perfect perfect line: Because if your mom isn't your biggest fan, then who is? How true that is - we yield such power in shaping our childrens lives and often don't realize it. So use that fake laugh until it becomes real (i.e., when the jokes actually are funny)!!! LOVED this posting.

  12. Haha.

I remember when my son first started telling jokes. He'd be all "Knock Knock?" I'd say, "Who's There?" and he'd be all, "Who knows?" I don't think he quite grasped the concept at first...

  13. LOL, at least he's enjoying the concept of humor - even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else. Keep laughing!

  14. Thank you for stopping by my blog! This entry made me laugh out loud because my little brother went through this phase, but his obsession was the diving board. So, it'd be:

    "Knock Knock!"
    "Who's there?"
    "Bugs Bunny!"
    "Bugs Bunny who?"
"BUGS BUNNY JUMPED OFF THE DIVING BOARD!" (cue hysterics!)

It was so weird, but so endearing. Kids are a crack up.
